The Washington Commanders opened the season in style, defeating the New York Giants 21–6 and keeping their division rivals out of the end zone for the entire afternoon. Here are ten fun facts from the Commanders’ opening day victory:
1. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore reached a major career milestone with his 100th regular season start. He looks healthy to start the season.
2. Wide receiver Chris Moore hauled in a 34-yard reception, his longest catch since Week 11 of the 2023 season. A good decision to call him up from the practice squad prior to today’s game.
3. Tight end Zach Ertz added another chapter to his Hall of Fame résumé. With his touchdown grab, he now has 54 career touchdown receptions, passing Dallas Clark and tying Wesley Walls for No. 11 all-time among tight ends.
4. Linebacker Bobby Wagner continues to build his legendary career. With his performance, he became the 12th active player to record 100+ career tackles for loss.
5. Rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt made a statement in his first NFL game, rushing for 82 yards and his first career touchdown.
6. Croskey-Merritt also became the first Washington running back to score a rushing touchdown in his debut since Alfred Morris in 2012.
7. Defensive tackle Daron Payne moved into sole possession of No. 9 all-time in franchise history in official sacks (since 1982), passing Andre Carter.
8. Wideout Deebo Samuel found the end zone on a 19-yard touchdown run, his longest rushing score since Week 10 of the 2023 season.
9. Quarterback Jayden Daniels continued to showcase his dual-threat ability. By rushing for 65+ yards, he joined Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to record multiple Week 1 games with 65+ rushing yards. Daniels is the only one to accomplish the feat in back-to-back seasons.
10. Adding to his milestone start, Lattimore also now ranks fifth among all active NFL players in career passes defensed.
