The Winston Churchill High School community (Potomac, MD) is mourning the loss of legendary football coach Fred Shepherd, a man whose influence extended far beyond the sidelines and into the lives of generations of student-athletes.
Churchill Athletics shared the news with heavy hearts, calling Shepherd “the heart and soul” of the Bulldogs football program. Known for his unwavering passion, tireless dedication, and deep love for his players, students, and colleagues, Shepherd built a legacy that left a permanent mark on the school and the wider community.
“To have known him — as a mentor, a teacher, a leader, or a friend — was to be truly fortunate,” the program’s tribute read. “He inspired greatness, demanded integrity, and gave endlessly of himself to see others succeed.”
Shepherd’s coaching career was defined by excellence. He guided the Bulldogs to an overall record of 209 wins and 78 losses, captured five Maryland Regional Championships, and led his teams to the state finals in 1982, 1985, 1988, 1993, and 1995. His crowning achievements came with back-to-back state championships in 1976 and 1977. His accomplishments earned him a place in the Bulldogs Hall of Fame, where his name and legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
More than his accolades, however, Shepherd will be remembered for the relationships he built and the lives he touched. Former players and colleagues often spoke of his ability to instill not just skill and discipline, but also values of integrity, perseverance, and teamwork.
As the Churchill community reflects on his decades of service and leadership, the outpouring of love and condolences to the Shepherd family is a testament to the profound impact he had on so many. His spirit, as the school shared, “will forever be part of who we are.”
