For nearly a decade, Churchill football had struggled to get over the hump against Northwest. The Bulldogs had dropped eight of their last nine meetings with the Jaguars, including a heart-breaking 21–20 loss the last time these two clashed. But on Friday night in Germantown, Churchill rewrote the script in dramatic fashion.
With the score tied 21–21 and less than a minute to play, senior quarterback Hunter Humphries delivered the moment every player dreams about. Rolling out under pressure, he spotted Nathan Bugel streaking down the sideline and rifled a 25-yard strike for the go-ahead touchdown with just 37 seconds left on the clock. The Bulldogs’ sideline erupted as Humphries capped off a three-touchdown night to seal the 28–21 road victory.
Humphries was sharp all evening, completing 76.5% of his passes for 184 yards. His top target, Bryan Ngouzo, was everywhere, hauling in two touchdowns on offense while also making an impact on defense with four tackles and a pass breakup. Ngouzo’s two-way effort gave the Bulldogs a spark that kept them steady when momentum threatened to swing back toward the Jaguars.
Northwest, despite starting 0–2 for the first time in years, showed plenty of fight. Junior running back Isaiah Taylor put on a highlight-reel performance, rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries. His 51-yard burst in the third quarter brought the Jaguars back level, and he added 32 yards through the air to keep the Bulldogs’ defense on its heels.
But in the end, it was Churchill’s defense that stood tall. After giving up a pair of scores to Taylor, the Bulldogs tightened the clamps and forced two key stops late in the fourth quarter, setting up Humphries’ game-winning drive. Through two games, the Bulldogs have surrendered just 21 points total, a testament to the physical edge head coach Joe Rydzewski has instilled in his squad.
For Churchill (2-0), the victory was about more than just staying unbeaten. It was payback, redemption, and a statement win rolled into one. For Northwest (0-2), it was another tough setback in a season that hasn’t started the way they envisioned, but one that showed flashes of what the Jaguars can still become.
The Bulldogs will look to carry that momentum into next week as they chase a perfect start, while the Jaguars are left searching for answers, and their first win of the season. Both squads will travel to Bethesda for their upcoming games. Churchill will face off against Walter Johnson on Friday. As for Northwest, they will take on BCC Friday.
