Commanders Sign Running Back to Help Replace Austin Ekeler

The Washington Commanders have signed veteran running back Chase Edmonds to their practice squad following the devastating injury to Austin Ekeler, who suffered a torn Achilles in last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. The injury, confirmed by MRI, will sideline Ekeler for the remainder of the 2025 season and raises questions about whether the 30-year-old back will be able to return to the field at all. The signing of Edmonds was first reported by Nicki Jhabvala.

Edmonds, 29, provides much-needed depth to a running back group now led by rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and Jeremy McNichols. Known for his versatility, Edmonds has carved out a career as a reliable pass catcher and change-of-pace runner, making him a logical fit in Washington’s offense.

The move also reunites Edmonds with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who coached him during their time together with the Arizona Cardinals. Kingsbury frequently praised Edmonds for his intelligence, vision, and ability to contribute in multiple roles, and often used him in creative packages to exploit mismatches. That familiarity could help Edmonds acclimate quickly to the Commanders’ system.

While Edmonds begins on the practice squad, his veteran experience and history with Kingsbury make him a strong candidate for an eventual promotion to the active roster. For Washington, the signing offers both immediate insurance and a potential weapon in an offense that suddenly finds itself reshaping its backfield in the wake of Ekeler’s injury.
