Commanders Sign Former Terps Star and 2019 First Round Pick

The Washington Commanders have signed former University of Maryland star and 2019 first-round pick Darnell Savage, bolstering their secondary after safety Will Harris suffered a broken fibula.

Harris, who was starting at safety in the Commanders’ defensive backfield, was injured in Sunday’s game, creating an immediate need for reinforcements. Washington wasted little time turning to Savage, a player with both NFL pedigree and local ties.

Savage, 26, was drafted 21st overall by the Green Bay Packers in 2019. During his five seasons in Green Bay, he started 69 games and recorded 9 interceptions, 31 passes defended, and 291 total tackles. Known for his speed and versatility, he spent time at both free safety and strong safety before a stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars this season.

Before his NFL career, Savage made his mark at the University of Maryland, where he became a fan favorite in College Park. He finished his collegiate career with 8 interceptions and was named Second-Team All-Big Ten as a senior in 2018. For the Commanders, the addition of Savage provides much-needed depth and experience in the secondary. His local connection is also notable for Montgomery County and DMV fans who followed his career at Maryland.
