Two weeks into the season, the picture in Montgomery County volleyball is starting to heat up. Magruder, Quince Orchard, and Sherwood all remain undefeated at 5-0, proving their early-season dominance. Wootton (5-1), Bethesda-Chevy Chase (4-1), and Richard Montgomery (4-1) continue to keep pace as the first chasers in a crowded top tier.
But it hasn’t been easy for anyone at the top. Surprise performances and close battles have defined Week 2. Gaithersburg pushed powerhouse Magruder to a five-set thriller before narrowly falling. Quince Orchard had to dig deep in their own five-set battle to stay unbeaten, while B-CC edged Churchill in a tight four-set contest.
The biggest statement of the week came from Churchill’s five-set victory over Urbana. While Richard Montgomery had fallen to Urbana earlier, the Bulldogs showed their grit by pulling off the upset, proving they can go toe-to-toe with anyone.
Meanwhile, Blair and Clarksburg (both 4-2) are emerging as dangerous mid-tier contenders, while Poolesville (3-2) and Wheaton (3-2) are staying steady. Walter Johnson, Whitman, Rockville, and Seneca Valley are trading wins in the 2–3 range, looking to break through.
For Damascus (1-4), Einstein (1-4), and Kennedy (0-4), the challenge is finding consistency, while Northwood, Paint Branch, Springbrook, and Watkins Mill continue searching for their first victory.
The county is gearing up for a loaded Week 3:
Magruder at Sherwood (Wed) – Undefeated giants collide.
Quince Orchard at B-CC (Wed) – Can B-CC hand the Cougars their first loss?
Wootton at Walter Johnson (Wed) – Classic rivalry with top-tier implications.
Whitman vs. Churchill (Wed) – The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back after dropping two straight following their big win over Urbana.
Quince Orchard at Whitman (Fri) – Another test for QO’s perfect record.
B-CC at Walter Johnson (Fri) – Another heavyweight showdown to end the week.
With teams showing they can push the favorites to the brink, nothing is guaranteed in MCPS volleyball this fall.
