Five Starbucks Locations Closing in Montgomery County as Part of Nationwide Restructuring

The count is now up to five Montgomery County stores that are set to close as part of a $1 billion restructuring plan announced Thursday by Starbucks. The company’s “Back to Starbucks” transformation, led by CEO Brian Niccol, involves shutting down certain underperforming North American coffeehouses and laying off workers.

Earlier today, we reported that the Aspen Hill location at 13677 Connecticut Avenue in the Aspen Hill Shopping Center and the Rockville/Derwood location at 8010 Gramercy Boulevard off Crabbs Branch Way would be closing. We have since learned that three additional Montgomery County stores are also slated for closure:

  • 898 Muddy Branch Road, Gaithersburg (Muddy Branch)
  • 1 Bethesda Metro Center, Bethesda
  • 7690 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park (Hampshire Langley Shopping Center)

These closures mark a significant local impact of Starbucks’ broader restructuring, which the company says is necessary to streamline operations and refocus its brand strategy. We will add any additional Montgomery County locations if we hear of any others.
