7-Eleven to Replace Taco Bar El Güero and Shell Convenience Store on Fields Road in Gaithersburg

Change is coming to 10003 Fields Road in Gaithersburg, as 7-Eleven prepares to take over the space currently home to Taco Bar El Güero and the Shell convenience store.

In August we let you know that Taco Bar El Güero, the longtime Gaithersburg favorite known for its gas station origins, is preparing to relocate across the street to Downtown Crown this fall. The family-owned restaurant, which has been serving the community since 2003 and was recently on Yelp’s national list of “10 Don’t-Miss Gas Station Restaurants 2025”, will hold a liquor license hearing on October 2, with plans to complete the move later that month.

With Taco Bar El Güero making its move, an employee of the Shell convenience store confirmed that 7-Eleven will be taking over the Fields Road space. Renovations are expected to begin in October, marking the start of the transition. The timing coincides with a broader transformation plan announced by Seven & i Holdings, the parent company of 7-Eleven.

The company has unveiled a sweeping initiative to expand and modernize its global convenience store network, with big implications for Montgomery County, where more than 60 7-Eleven locations already operate. As part of its plan, 7-Eleven aims to open approximately 1,300 new large-format stores in the U.S. and Canada by 2030, nearly doubling its current pace of expansion.

These new stores will feature expanded product lines, stronger fresh food offerings, enhanced food service options, and improved delivery through the 7NOW platform, which is expected to reach over half of the U.S. population. In addition, around 5,000 existing stores are slated for remodels, with 1,100 “restaurant-style” counters planned in the next several years.
