MoCo High School Football Week 5 Preview & Predictions

The season is heating up, and Montgomery County is already showing us plenty of storylines: the defending champions at Quince Orchard remain untouchable, upstarts like Churchill and Blake are fighting for recognition, and the middle pack is scrapping for playoff positioning. This week offers everything from potential shootouts to old-school defensive struggles. Let’s dive into the matchups.

Quince Orchard (4–0) at Churchill (4–0): The Cougars face their third straight test from an undefeated foe, but the question remains the same: can anyone hang within striking distance? Churchill hasn’t scored a point against QO in over a decade, yet this might be the most balanced Bulldog squad of the Coach Rydzewski era. They’ve started 4–0 for the first time since 2018, leaning on a diversified offense that finally looks ready for prime time.

The problem? QO’s trenches. The Cougars’ line play is suffocating on both sides of the ball, and until someone can match them up front, the results will stay the same. Churchill may land a few punches, but expect the Cougars to grind them down. Prediction: Quince Orchard 38, Churchill 13

Wheaton (3–1) at Richard Montgomery (2–2): Is this going to be a fireworks show? On paper, it has all the makings. Wheaton has cooled off since hanging 60+ on Springbrook earlier in the year, sputtering against Poolesville before getting blanked by B-CC. But the Rockets’ defense hasn’t exactly struck fear into opponents either, giving up 43 to Damascus and 39 to Clarksburg.

The key? Pace of play. RM has put up at least 26 points in every outing this year, boasting one of the more balanced attacks in the county. If Wheaton still has juice, they can trade blows, but the Rockets feel steadier and more disciplined at this stage. Prediction: Richard Montgomery 62, Wheaton 35

B-CC (2–2) at Paint Branch (3–1): B-CC’s reward for shutting out Wheaton? A date with one of the county’s nastiest defensive fronts. Paint Branch has bottled up almost every rushing attack it’s faced and Alijah Bah continues to be the Panthers’ engine. Possessions will be limited, which favors PB’s discipline and big-play ability. Prediction: Paint Branch 34, B-CC 8

Seneca Valley (2–2) at Walter Johnson (2–2): Both teams have flashed potential, but neither has put it together consistently.  This one comes down to execution, and Seneca’s athleticism at the skill positions might tip the balance. Prediction: Seneca Valley 29, Walter Johnson 21

Gaithersburg (2–2) at Northwest (1–3): The Jaguars desperately need a “get right” game after a brutal opening stretch. Gaithersburg is intriguing but inconsistent, competitive one week, overwhelmed the next. If Northwest wants to reestablish itself as a contender, this is the week to make a statement. Prediction: Northwest 41, Gaithersburg 12

Clarksburg (2–2) at Sherwood (4–0): Clarksburg’s thrilling win over RM was one for the books, but Sherwood’s defense is on another level. The Warriors haven’t blinked all season, and they’ll be eager to prove their top-three ranking is deserved. Prediction: Sherwood 38, Clarksburg 0

Damascus (3–1) at Rockville (2–2): After a reality check against Oakdale, Damascus looks to reset. Rockville, meanwhile, has scored just six points across its last two games. The Hornets’ youth means they’re not a sure thing every week, but their physicality should overwhelm the Rams. Prediction: Damascus 28, Rockville 6

Wootton (1–3) at Magruder (1–3): Two 4A/3A West squads meet in a fight to stay off the region’s bottom rung. Wootton showed grit in nearly upsetting WJ, while Magruder found a way to beat Rockville. This one feels tight, but the Patriots’ incremental progress may finally pay off. Prediction: Wootton 23, Magruder 17

Blake (3–1) at Blair (1–3): Congrats to Blair for notching their first win, but the timing isn’t ideal. Blake is still stinging from a rivalry loss and has the firepower to take out frustrations in a hurry. Prediction: Blake 55, Blair 10

Springbrook (0–4) at Whitman (2–2): Springbrook’s fall has been tough to watch, capped by allowing 50+ to Kennedy. Whitman is steady if unspectacular, but steady is more than enough against the Blue Devils. Prediction: Whitman 47, Springbrook 6

Einstein (1–3) at Watkins Mill (1–3): Einstein has looked outmatched, but Watkins Mill hasn’t been much better. This is a battle of attrition, likely decided by one or two big plays. The Titans get the slightest of edges at home. Prediction: Einstein 10, Watkins Mill 9

Northwood (1–3) at Kennedy (2–2): Kennedy is riding a rare wave of momentum after back-to-back wins, including their first 50-point outburst since the Melvin Harris era. Northwood finally got a W too, but the Cavaliers’ offense is humming. That makes three straight for Kennedy, a streak this program hasn’t enjoyed in a long time. Prediction: Kennedy 36, Northwood 18

Smithsburg (2–2) at Poolesville (1–3): Poolesville has an opportunity to prove its early stumbles aren’t the whole story. Smithsburg has beaten bad teams but hasn’t impressed otherwise. A scrappy Falcons team can pull this one out at home. Prediction: Poolesville 17, Smithsburg 14:

This week should provide clarity in the muddled middle of the county, while the top tier looks to keep rolling. The question remains: can anyone slow Quince Orchard’s march through another fall?
