Montgomery County residents have long expected their public schools to be places of excellence, welcoming, safe, and inclusive environments that foster learning. But with growing frustration about the condition of too many aging school buildings, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas W. Taylor says it’s time to face some hard truths and take decisive action.
On Monday, October 13, at 6pm, Dr. Taylor will deliver a live presentation titled “Hard Truths About Our School Buildings and How We’ll Fix Them.” The event will take an unflinching look at the challenges MCPS faces in maintaining and modernizing its facilities, while outlining a disciplined plan to repair and upgrade schools across the county.
The presentation will preview the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Capital Budget and FY 2027–2032 Capital Improvements Program (CIP), a roadmap that determines how MCPS will prioritize renovation, construction, and infrastructure needs in the years ahead. Residents can tune in live at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org or watch on MCPS-TV (Comcast 34, Verizon 36, RCN 88).
Public input will play a key role in shaping the final plan. The Board of Education will hold public hearings on October 23, October 28, and November 6 (if needed) to gather community feedback. In addition, MCPS will host two CIP Community Information and Listening Sessions, one in person on October 21 and another virtual session on October 22, to give families and staff a chance to share their perspectives before the Board’s deliberations.
Residents are encouraged to watch the presentation live and participate in the upcoming public sessions to help shape the future of Montgomery County’s schools.
