The regular season is heading into the home stretch, and with playoff positioning heating up, separation week has officially arrived. Some teams are flexing their dominance, others are finding their groove at just the right time and a few are fighting to remind everyone they belong in the conversation. Here’s how the county’s best stack up heading into Week 8:
1) Quince Orchard (7-0) | Last Week: 1
The Cougars did what the Cougars do, overwhelm, suffocate, and conquer. QO dismantled Clarksburg 42-0 behind a three-touchdown night from sophomore sensation JJ Williams, while Will Drakeford continued to look the part of an all-county quarterback, throwing for 241 yards and two scores. Now comes “The Game” , the annual showdown with Northwest. The stakes, the crowd, the noise, none of it ever gets old in Gaithersburg. But as always, this rivalry ignores the records. The Cougars better be ready for a war.
2) Paint Branch (6-1) | Last Week: 2
There’s a fine line between dominance and cruelty, and Paint Branch might be straddling it. The Panthers throttled Whitman 61-0, their third straight shutout of the season. Quarterback Vincent Do was flawless, racking up 276 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Alijah Bah continued his scoring spree with three more. But the schedule stiffens now, rival Blake is coming to Burtonsville, angry and desperate. The cupcakes are done; it’s time for some meat.
3) Sherwood (6-1) | Last Week: 3
The Warriors didn’t need long to recover from their Quince Orchard heartbreaker. They rolled past Wootton 35-0, fueled by Frankie Saunders and his 118 yards and three touchdowns. Next up is a heavyweight rematch at Damascus, one of the state’s most tradition-rich rivalries. .
4) Churchill (6-1) | Last Week: 4
The Bulldogs are looking more and more like a complete football team. Their 35-0 demolition of Seneca Valley was textbook balance Hunter Humphries threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns, while Noah Zhang added 134 rushing yards and another score. Churchill now heads home to host Wootton, a game that could feature some extra juice as Humphries and Bryan Ngouzo face their former team.
5) Northwest (4-3) | Last Week: 6
They’re back. After a rocky start, the Jaguars have rediscovered their rhythm, steamrolling Walter Johnson 41-6 behind a crisp performance from Jayden Vongprachanh-Nelson (240 yards, four total TDs). Chris Tangelo dominated on the outside, hauling in 125 yards and a touchdown. The Jags are clicking, confident, and coming for Quince Orchard this week. They’ve made a habit of rising to the moment in big games and this one is as big as it gets.
6) Richard Montgomery (5-2) | Last Week: 7
The Rockets soared against Gaithersburg, torching the Trojans 52-14 for their best offensive output of the season. Dylan Webster delivered 263 passing yards and four touchdowns, three to standout wideout Gerard Woods Jr. RM’s passing game is firing on all cylinders, and they’ll look to keep the rockets lit when they travel to take on rival Rockville.
7) Bethesda-Chevy Chase (4-3) | Last Week: 8
It’s official, the Barons are for real. Their 28-13 upset over Blake was no fluke. Jaylen Ball’s 90-yard pick-six set the tone, and Gabe Eisler continued his monster season with 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Eisler’s blend of toughness and vision has become the heartbeat of this team. B-CC heads to Springbrook next, looking to keep their momentum rolling and lock in strong playoff positioning.
8) Blake (5-2) | Last Week: 5
The Bengals were the latest victim of B-CC’s surge, falling 28-13 in a game that saw their offense stall until late. Quarterback Will Cameron tossed two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome early miscues. Things don’t get easier, up next is a trip to Paint Branch in a rivalry matchup that could define Blake’s season. Win, and they’re right back in the mix. Lose, and they’ll be searching for answers heading into November.
9) Damascus (5-2) | Last Week: 9
Seventy-two points. That’s all that needs to be said about Damascus’ destruction of Einstein, a 72-6 clinic that showcased the Hornets’ trademark physicality. They’ll need every ounce of that edge this Thursday when Sherwood visits for a clash dripping with history and bad blood. Expect a packed house and a playoff-level atmosphere in the Hornets Nest.
10) Wheaton (5-2) | Last Week: NR
The Knights are officially on the map. A 38-0 shutout of Northwood gave them their second shutout of the year, powered by Michael Tatso’s bruising ground game and two scores. Wheaton’s defense has quietly been one of the county’s toughest units all year. This week brings The Rumble on Randolph Road against Kennedy, a rivalry game that always delivers a little extra electricity.
