As the calendar turns toward late October, playoff positioning, rivalries, and bragging rights take center stage across Montgomery County. A few division titles could effectively be decided this weekend, while several teams fight for postseason seeding. Here’s your full slate of previews and predictions for Week 8.
Sherwood (6-1) at Damascus (5-2)
Damascus’ 72-point explosion last week says more about Einstein’s defense than any offensive renaissance from the Hornets. Now they run into a Sherwood squad that’s been rolling through the county with physical dominance and relentless line play. The Warriors’ front seven should suffocate Damascus’ ground game, forcing the Hornets into uncomfortable passing downs. Expect Sherwood to control time of possession and slowly squeeze the life out of this one.
Prediction: Sherwood 38, Damascus 0
Richard Montgomery (5-2) at Rockville (2-5)
Last week’s 7-6 escape over Poolesville might technically count as a win for Rockville, but it was about as inspiring as a three-yard punt. RM, meanwhile, boasts one of the most explosive passing attacks in the region and should treat this matchup as a tune-up for the postseason push. The Rockets have too many weapons, too much rhythm, and too much to play for.
Prediction: Richard Montgomery 61, Rockville 7
Blake (5-2) at Paint Branch (6-1)
The “Battle of Briggs Chaney” feels bigger than ever. Paint Branch is eyeing a division title, while Blake’s hoping to rebound after an emotional loss to B-CC. Unfortunately for the Bengals, their offensive identity remains muddled, all that muscle in the trenches hasn’t translated into consistent production. The Panthers, on the other hand, have their man in Alijah Bah, who’s been a steady difference-maker. Expect PB’s defense to swarm early and often.
Prediction: Paint Branch 36, Blake 7
Wheaton (5-2) at Kennedy (4-3)
Randolph Road will be buzzing Friday night with a rivalry game that suddenly carries real stakes. Both teams are enjoying renaissance seasons, but only one will keep momentum rolling toward the postseason. This should be an old-school slugfest with heavy doses of running and grit. Kennedy’s coming off an emotional loss that could linger, while Wheaton’s physicality has been on a steady rise. The Knights pull it off late, but expect some fireworks.
Prediction: Wheaton 22, Kennedy 20
Wootton (2-5) at Churchill (6-1)
There’s plenty of familiarity here, and maybe some tension, as ex-Wootton standouts Hunter Humphries and Bryan Ngouzo now suit up for Churchill. Expect Wootton to play inspired football early, trying to prove a point. But talent and depth win out in the long run, and Churchill’s got both in spades. The Bulldogs’ defense should clamp down by halftime, and the offense will eventually break the game open.
Prediction: Churchill 29, Wootton 10
Bethesda-Chevy Chase (4-3) at Springbrook (0-7)
Springbrook’s effort level remains commendable despite the record, but effort can only take you so far when numbers are thin and depth is nonexistent. B-CC, fresh off a statement win over Blake, should dominate both sides of the ball. If the Barons bring the same energy and discipline, this one will be over early. Prediction: B-CC 52, Springbrook 7
Seneca Valley (3-4) at Blair (3-4)
This matchup is a true litmus test for both programs. Blair’s been feasting on lighter opponents, while Seneca Valley’s endured the gauntlet of the county’s elite. The Blazers’ skill talent can keep them competitive early, but SV’s physicality and playoff experience give them the edge. The Eagles reassert themselves as a dangerous middle-tier team.
Prediction: Seneca Valley 27, Blair 14
Whitman (3-4) at Walter Johnson (2-5)
If there’s one game that could use a mercy rule, it might be this one. Walter Johnson’s had their struggles, but Whitman’s season has been nothing short of disastrous. The Wildcats should control every aspect of the game, and by the fourth quarter, this one might resemble a scrimmage. Prediction: Walter Johnson 41, Whitman 0
Magruder (2-5) at Gaithersburg (2-5)
Two proud programs trying to claw their way back to relevance meet in what could quietly be one of the weekend’s better contests. Magruder’s coming off an emotional win and playing loose, while Gaithersburg’s inconsistency continues to plague them. The Colonels’ slightly deeper rotation and defensive discipline should make the difference down the stretch.
Prediction: Magruder 20, Gaithersburg 7
Clarksburg (3-4) at Watkins Mill (1-6)
Clarksburg’s performance against Quince Orchard was better than the final score indicated, they played hard, hit hard, and never looked intimidated. That effort will pay off this week against a Watkins Mill team still trying to find its identity. Expect the Coyotes to run wild early and build confidence heading into the final stretch. Prediction: Clarksburg 48, Watkins Mill 8
Einstein (2-5) at Poolesville (3-4)
It’s been an all-time rough year for Einstein’s defense, 42 allowed to Northwood, 38 to Watkins Mill, 56 to Kennedy, 72 to Damascus. That’s not a typo. Poolesville’s offense hasn’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard, but this could be their get-right game. The Falcons should find success on the ground and keep Einstein chasing shadows. Prediction: Poolesville 42, Einstein 14
Northwood (1-6) at Centennial (0-7)
If Centennial can even field a full roster, that’ll be step one. The Eagles’ forfeit last week signals serious depth issues. Northwood hasn’t scored in two weeks, but even a single touchdown might be enough here. If this one happens, it probably won’t be pretty, but the Gladiators will take it. Prediction: Northwood 8, Centennial 0
