Gude Drive in Rockville is named for Gilbert Gude, a lifelong Montgomery County resident who served the community for decades as a legislator and environmental advocate.
Born in Washington DC and raised in Rockville, Gude represented Montgomery County in the Maryland General Assembly before serving as the Sixth District representative in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1967 to 1977. At that time, the district still included much of Montgomery County.
Known as a moderate Republican with a focus on environmental issues, Gude worked to protect the Potomac River and was instrumental in preserving the C&O Canal as a national historical park. His efforts helped ensure that the 184-mile canal and towpath remained a public treasure rather than being lost to commercial development.
Gude also served in both the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate, where he became known for his collaborative approach to government and his focus on land use and conservation. After leaving Congress, he continued to write about politics and environmental policy and remained active in local affairs until his death in 2007.
The road that bears his name, Gude Drive, runs through the center of Rockville. East Gude Drive extends from Norbeck Road (MD 28) to Frederick Road (MD 355), while West Gude Drive continues from 355 to West Montgomery Avenue (MD 28). The two sections connect several of Rockville’s busiest business and industrial corridors and serve as a key route for local traffic.
Thousands of residents and commuters travel Gude Drive each day, often unaware that the road honors a Montgomery County leader who helped shape both the physical and civic landscape of the community.
