The Game of the Week in Montgomery County lived up to its billing, at least for a while. Under the Friday night lights in Gaithersburg, the undefeated Quince Orchard Cougars once again asserted their dominance over archrival Northwest, pulling away for a 35-16 victory to move to 8-0 on the season.
It was the latest chapter in a rivalry that has defined MoCo football for over a decade, and once again, John Kelley’s Cougars found a way to make the plays that matter most. The win marked Quince Orchard’s 85th victory in their last 88 games, a staggering mark of consistency and excellence.
The opening quarter set the tone for an intense back-and-forth affair. Quince Orchard’s explosive running back Jaheim Bond opened the scoring by bulldozing through the Jaguar defense for a four-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. But Northwest answered right back when Isaiah Taylor bounced outside and outran the Cougar defense for a touchdown, giving the Jaguars a brief 7-6 lead late in the period.
The second quarter, however, belonged to QO’s power ground game. Sophomore running back Damien Hurtado punched in a three-yard score to reclaim the lead before Northwest’s Jayden Vongprachanh-Nelsonfound Warren Jackson over the middle for a 15-yard strike to tie things up at 14. Just when it looked like the teams would head into halftime deadlocked, Bond muscled his way in for another short touchdown with under 30 seconds left, giving Quince Orchard a 21-14 advantage at the break.
From there, the Cougars began to impose their will. Hurtado added his second touchdown of the night early in the third quarter to extend the lead to 28-14. A mishandled snap later resulted in a NW safety that momentarily gave the Jags life, cutting the margin to 28-16. But senior quarterback Will Drakeford made sure there would be no comeback story this time. Rolling out on play action late in the game, he found tight end Diego Rodriguez in the back of the end zone for the dagger, a perfectly placed touchdown pass that sealed a 35-16 final.
Bond and Hurtado each finished with two touchdowns apiece, while Drakeford’s connection with Rodriguez capped off a complete team performance from the Cougars.
With the victory, Quince Orchard remains the gold standard in Montgomery County football, improving to 8-0 as they prepare to host Gaithersburg (3-5) next week. The Trojans are coming off a 23-6 win over Magruder but will face a monumental challenge in trying to slow down the Cougars’ machine.
As for Northwest (4-4), the Jaguars will look to regroup when they travel to face Blair (4-4) on October 31, a Halloween matchup that could define their playoff positioning.
