Maryland’s Viral ‘African Chipotle’ Concept is Drawing Diners from Across The State

A new fast-casual restaurant in Baltimore’s Cross Street Market is quickly making a name for itself, and earning a viral nickname in the process. The Jollof Bowl (1065 S. Charles St.) has been called the “African Chipotle,” offering a build-your-own experience inspired by the vibrant flavors of West Africa.

The husband-and-wife team behind The Jollof Bowl say the concept was born from months of research into what types of restaurants succeed in modern dining spaces. Their idea: pair authentic African cuisine with the convenience and customization of a quick-service model. The result is a sleek, colorful stall where guests can craft their own bowl or wrap, starting at $15.99, choosing from bases like jollof rice or noodles, proteins such as grilled chicken, shrimp, or roasted goat, and sauces including pepper, suya aioli, and groundnut BBQ.

According to the restaurant, “every bite celebrates West African flavors in Baltimore.” Their signature dish starts with tomato- and spice-infused jollof rice, topped with grilled proteins or vegan medleys, and finished with bold sauces. The menu also features seasonal specials highlighting regional recipes, and everything is made with an emphasis on fresh, quality ingredients.

The buzz has spread far beyond Baltimore. Montgomery County residents Isaac L. and Melissa R. made the trip to Cross Street Market after hearing about the restaurant online. “The food was beyond good. Very flavorful! Even my somewhat picky 5-year-old got his own bowl and ate most of it,” they said. “We were impressed! I’ve been craving it since.”

Lines have been long, but customers say they move quickly, and the food is worth the wait. The Jollof Bowl’s warm hospitality, bold flavors, and accessible format have turned it into one of Maryland’s most talked-about new dining experiences, blending cultural authenticity with modern fast-casual energy.
