At their November 18 meeting, the Town of Poolesville Commissioners voted unanimously to endorse Montgomery County Public Schools’ plan to install a turf field at Poolesville High School’s Howard Lyles Stadium.
According to the announcement, the decision follows several days of document reviews, conversations with industry and environmental experts, and an evaluation of the town’s own PFAS treatment strategies, which local leaders say are already among the most proactive in Maryland.
Officials emphasized that the endorsement came only after ensuring the new field aligns with Poolesville’s standards for community health, environmental responsibility, and long-term sustainability.
According to the Commissioners, the installation, backed by specific commitments from MCPS, will provide a more equitable and consistent playing surface for PHS athletes and community users. They highlighted that the water-conserving nature of modern turf fields, along with requirements for stormwater recapture and treatment, fit the town’s environmentally conservative long-term goals.
However, the announcement sparked an active discussion among residents, with some raising concerns about the potential for increased athletic injuries on turf surfaces and uncertainty over who will cover the cost of ongoing maintenance. While these concerns remain part of the community conversation, town officials reaffirmed that their endorsement is rooted in safety, equity, and environmental protections built into the project’s framework.
