Icy Conditions Lead to Multiple Crashes Across Montgomery County Sunday

Icy conditions across parts of Montgomery County led to several crashes on Sunday, including multiple incidents along Interstate 270, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) chief spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Around 11:30 a.m., a single vehicle crashed and rolled over on the southbound I-270 sky ramp to eastbound I-370. MCFRS units responded and transported one adult with Priority 2 trauma injuries. The ramp was closed due to icy road conditions and some nearby lanes were also blocked as crews worked at the scene.

Another crash was reported on Clopper Road at Village Fountain Drive in Germantown, where a single vehicle spun out on icy pavement and struck a road sign. The collision resulted in lane blockages in the area while responders handled the incident and cleared the roadway. No additional injury information was immediately available from that scene.

A separate rollover crash occurred on the southbound I-270 Spur on the ramp toward Montgomery Mall at Democracy Boulevard. According to Piringer, the vehicle went down an embankment, prompting a response from multiple MCFRS units, including PE726, A723, RS703, EMS701, SA700, and BC702. The ramp and some lanes in the area were blocked while emergency crews worked to assist occupants and secure the scene.

At 1:04 p.m., Alert Montgomery issued a severe traffic alert to drivers, stating, “Traffic incident closes all lanes of southbound I-270 ramp onto eastbound I-370. Expect significant delays. Seek alternate route.” Drivers are urged to use caution on elevated ramps and bridges, where icy spots can develop more quickly, and to allow extra time for travel as winter weather continues to affect road conditions.
