60 Firefighters Battle Kitchen Fire That Displaces Family

A kitchen fire in a Wheaton townhouse Sunday evening displaced at least one family and prompted a large emergency response, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service officials.

MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer said crews were dispatched around 6:50pm to the 2800 block of Schoolhouse Circle, near Veirs Mill Road, after reports of smoke coming from a three-story townhouse. Firefighters arrived to find a fire on the second floor of the home.

An update at 7:40pm confirmed the fire originated in the kitchen on the second level of the three-story townhouse in the Town and Country townhouse community. The fire was extinguished, and approximately 60 MCFRS firefighters responded to the scene. One firefighter was evaluated for illness, but no other injuries were reported.

By 8:53pm, MCFRS officials reported that Engine 721 quickly knocked down the fire, with no apparent extension beyond the affected townhouse. Two occupants and a dog safely exited the home. At least one family has been displaced as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
