Name Change Clarifies Bob’s Bethesda Is Not Linked to Rockville’s Bob’s Shanghai

Back in November, we reported that a new restaurant named Bob’s Shanghai would be opening in Bethesda, appearing to be an expansion of the popular Rockville restaurant of the same name. Since then, that plan has been clarified, and the restaurant coming to Bethesda will not be affiliated with Bob’s Shanghai in Rockville.

The upcoming Bethesda restaurant has changed its name to Bob’s Bethesda, and its Instagram handle has been updated from @bobsshanghaibethesda to @bobsbethesda. Bob’s Bethesda is expected to open at 7776 Norfolk Ave., in the former home of Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, which closed in September 2024 after nearly five years in the space. The location sits on the ground floor of the Windsor Bethesda building and has remained one of downtown Bethesda’s more high profile restaurant vacancies.

Amid confusion surrounding the name and a possible connection, Bob’s Shanghai in Rockville posted a message on the door of its restaurant to address the rumors.

“TO OUR AMAZING

BOB’S SHANGHAI FAMILY

We’ve heard some rumors going around, and we want to clear things up: we are NOT opening a Bethesda location.

Our one and only home is right here in Rockville, MD.

Thank you truly for your love, support, and loyalty over the years.

You are the heart of Bob’s Shanghai, and we’re so thankful to serve this community.

We’re sorry for any confusion, and we hope to keep welcoming you back to the place where it all began.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

BOB’S SHANGHAI (ROCKVILLE, MD)”

We reached out to Bob’s Bethesda for comment but have not yet heard back. The restaurant is expected to offer soup dumplings, though additional menu details have not been made available at this time. Bob’s Bethesda is aiming for a spring 2026 opening. We will update this article if we hear back or as more information becomes available.
