Kliff Kingsbury Reflects on Jayden Daniels, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, and His Own Future

In Thursday’s press conference ahead of the final game of the season, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury reflected on second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels’ season, praised the emergence of rookie running back Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, and briefly addressed speculation about potential head coaching opportunities.

Kingsbury gave Daniels’ season an “incomplete,” citing injuries that limited his availability and prevented him from fully showing what he can do. He said Daniels’ talent level, appreciation for the game, work ethic, and study habits were all clearly evident, calling it unfortunate that he was unable to consistently display those traits on the field. Kingsbury described Daniels as a tremendous talent and an outstanding person and player, adding that he is confident Daniels will learn from the experience and continue to grow moving forward.

When asked whether he is interested in or open to head coaching opportunities, Kingsbury said he is “going to kind of cross that bridge if and when we get there,” signaling that his focus remains on the present and his role with Washington.

Kingsbury also offered high praise for rookie running back Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, highlighting his natural playmaking ability. “When he touches the ball, good things happen. A lot of things he does naturally,” Kingsbury said. He added that as Croskey-Merritt continues to develop his understanding of the game away from the football, his impact will only increase, noting that several of the plays he has already made while still learning have been impressive.

Croskey-Merritt’s strong play has earned league recognition. For the fourth time this season, he was named Pepsi Rookie of the Week, making him the only rookie in the NFL to win the award multiple times this year.
