The Washington Commanders have moved on from both of their coordinators, parting ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., according to multiple reports.
NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay reported that a Commanders source said, “Dan Quinn met with Kliff Kingsbury today to discuss the future of the offense. After those conversations, we have mutually parted ways. Additionally, we have moved on from DC Joe Whitt Jr.”
Whitt had already been relieved of play-calling duties midway through the season, with head coach Dan Quinn taking over those responsibilities on the defensive side of the ball.
Kingsbury’s departure comes as his name has circulated in recent weeks in connection with multiple head coaching openings around the league. His offensive system had drawn praise from several players, particularly rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.
ESPN’s John Keim characterized the move as a significant one for Quinn, writing, “This is a big move from Dan Quinn. Call it risky as well. Offensive players liked playing for Kingsbury and in his system — notably quarterback Jayden Daniels.”
