David Blough was recently promoted to Offensive Coordinator by the Washington Commanders At only 30 years old, he is one of the youngest coordinators in the league and has had a meteoric rise through the coaching ranks. Here are some fun facts about the Commanders’ new OC:
1. Playing Days: Blough was a backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions from 2018-2021 and for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. The Cardinals were coached by previous Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury during Blough’s time there as a player. He has six career touchdowns and nine interceptions.
2. Power Couple Status: Blough is married to Melissa Gonzalez, a world-class Olympic hurdler who competed for Colombia in the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. They were high school sweethearts at Creekview High School in Texas.
2. NFL Family Ties: Through his wife, David is the brother-in-law of Christian Gonzalez, the star cornerback for the New England Patriots.
3. Giant Killer at Purdue: In college, David became a Purdue legend on October 20, 2018, when he led the unranked Boilermakers to a massive 49-20 upset over #2 Ohio State. He threw for 378 yards and 3 touchdowns in what is famously remembered as the “Tyler Trent Game.”
4. A “Hard Knocks” Favorite: Fans might remember him from the 2022 season of Hard Knocks with the Detroit Lions. He was often highlighted for his positive attitude, his close bond with his wife (who was training for the Olympics at the time), and his high football IQ, which many coaches noted even back then.
5. From Player to OC in No Time: Blough’s transition has been incredibly fast. In 2023, he returned to Detroit Lions as a player on the practice squad. In 2024, he was the Assistant Quarterbacks Coach for the Commanders (helping Jayden Daniels win Rookie of the Year). In 2025, he became the Quarterbacks Coach mid-season, and now in 2026 has been named Offensive Coordinator.
6. Versatile Scorer: During his playing days with the Lions, he didn’t just throw the ball, he also caught a touchdown. In a 2019 game against the Cardinals, he caught a 19-yard touchdown pass on a trick play.
7. He is a Literal Magician: During his time with the Detroit Lions, Blough became famous in the locker room for his professional-level magic tricks. He’s been filmed performing complex card tricks and mentalism for his teammates, including a viral segment where he completely baffled Lions players with his sleight of hand.
8. Global Humanitarian Work: Blough’s commitment to service goes far beyond the typical “charity event.” He has participated in five different mission trips to South Africa with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He is also a major supporter of Compassion International, even wearing custom “My Cause My Cleats” shoes to raise money for children living in poverty.
9. A Record-Breaking “Boilermaker”: While he’s known for the Ohio State upset, Blough actually holds one of the most prestigious passing records at Purdue, a school known as the “Cradle of Quarterbacks” (producing legends like Drew Brees and Bob Griese). Blough holds the school record for most passing yards in a single game (572 yards), set against Missouri in 2018.
10. The “Plow” Pronunciation: Despite the unusual spelling, his last name is actually very simple to pronounce. He frequently tells fans and broadcasters that it “rhymes with plow.”
