Washington Commanders Unveil First Conceptual Renderings of Proposed New Stadium

The Washington Commanders on Thursday morning unveiled the first conceptual renderings of the team’s proposed new stadium, developed in partnership with global design firm HKS. The roofed venue is envisioned as a world class, year round destination for sports, entertainment, and community events, while also serving as a catalyst for surrounding mixed use development.

HKS was selected as lead architect in November and is known for designing major venues such as SoFi Stadium in California, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota, and AT&T Stadium in Texas. According to the team, the proposed stadium would accommodate more than 70,000 fans and is intended to function both as a neighborhood gathering space and a national stage for major events.

Team president Mark Clouse called the release of the renderings a defining milestone in the project, emphasizing the goal of honoring the legacy of RFK Stadium while delivering a best in class fan experience. He said the design is meant to support football, host year round events, and become a point of pride for the community, with additional public feedback expected as plans continue to evolve.

District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said the project represents a major opportunity for the city, highlighting the return of the Commanders, year round events near public transportation, job creation for DC residents, and new opportunities for local businesses. She described the stadium as a potential catalyst for future growth at the RFK campus.

The stadium would be built on the former RFK Stadium site and aligned with the L’Enfant Plan. Plans call for expanded waterfront access, new outdoor plazas, public spaces, and green areas, with at least 30 percent of the site dedicated to active and passive recreation to support long term accessibility.

Architectural concepts include a sculpted, transparent domed roof designed to connect the city’s historic core with the Anacostia River while respecting views of the U.S. Capitol and surrounding monuments. Inspired by RFK Stadium, the design emphasizes openness and shared experience, including a continuous colonnade linking the public realm with the interior of the stadium.

HKS and the Commanders have participated in multiple community engagement sessions with District leaders and residents, with more meetings planned through January. Stadium construction is currently anticipated to be completed in 2030.
