Poolesville Declares Snow Emergency Ahead of Weekend Storm

The Town of Poolesville has declared a winter weather emergency in anticipation of substantial snowfall expected this weekend.

According to the town, the snow emergency will begin at 6 PM on Saturday, January 24, and remain in effect until noon on Tuesday, January 27. The declaration was issued by the town manager under section 12.7 of the Town of Poolesville code to support snow removal and public safety efforts.

Residents are being asked to park all vehicles in their driveways during the emergency period. Vehicles left on roadways can create hazards, slow snow removal operations, and increase the risk of vehicle damage. The town noted that, under local code, vehicles that pose a hazard during snow events may be towed.

Town officials say plowing typically begins once snowfall reaches 2 to 3 inches and temperatures indicate that melting is unlikely. Even after plows pass through, hard packed snow often remains due to traffic, at which point salt is applied to improve traction. Crews aim to service each road approximately every two hours, though streets are plowed based on priority.

Poolesville’s snow response includes about 10 town employees, two contractors, and 10 pieces of snow removal equipment. Crews work around the clock until all town maintained streets are passable.

Officials also reminded residents that plowing operations often create snow berms across driveways. While crews try to minimize this, operators cannot fully control how snow is displaced during heavy accumulations. Residents can reduce buildup by shoveling out an area to the right side of their driveway, when facing their home, allowing snow on the plow blade to be discharged before reaching the driveway.

The town applauded residents and business owners who clear sidewalks and assist neighbors during winter storms. Property owners are required to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall to keep routes safe for children walking to school or bus stops. Residents are also encouraged to help elderly or disabled neighbors and to clear snow from fire hydrants near their property.

Town officials asked residents to remain patient throughout the event, noting that snow operations are labor intensive and equipment issues can occur. The town emphasized that staff are committed to keeping residents safe during winter weather.
