As the region keeps an eye on a potential storm that is now expected to track east and miss the area, the Apple Weather app once again raised eyebrows by briefly showing the possibility of a foot of snow.
The forecast echoes recent frustration with the app’s performance during winter weather events. Just yesterday, FOX45 meteorologist Gerard Jebaily publicly called out Apple Weather after it repeatedly projected more than 20 inches of snow in the days leading up to last weekend’s storm. After the storm ended, the app appeared to significantly overstate snowfall totals, showing more than two feet of snow in locations that ultimately saw less than 10 inches.
On Monday, NBC4 chief meteorologist Doug Kammerer also weighed in, posting on social media to caution residents against relying on the app’s projections. “Again!! The darn Apple app is scaring people showing a total of 14–17 inches this weekend,” Kammerer wrote. “Do not listen to it. No meteorologist actually looks at it. I’ve got you covered with any storms that move our way. As for the storm this weekend, as of right now there is a chance for snow. I think the best chance is that this storm will stay just off to our east. You know I’ll be watching it for you.”
Overnight and early morning model runs Sunday into Monday did show the potential for another significant winter storm this coming weekend. However, newer guidance released later Monday shifted the storm farther east, sending it into the Atlantic Ocean before reaching the region. Forecast confidence remains low, and meteorologists will continue monitoring future model runs to see if the system trends back toward the coast or remains a miss.
