Maryland Amazon Fresh Stores Offer 50% Off Ahead of Sunday Closures

Maryland Amazon Fresh locations are offering steep discounts as the company prepares to close most of its Amazon Fresh grocery stores nationwide this weekend (some stores have or will close earlier depending on inventory).

Amazon announced that it will shut down all Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh grocery stores across the country. Since that announcement, customers have reported that some Maryland locations are offering 50 percent off items, leading to long lines and heavy foot traffic, particularly at the Gaithersburg store.

Amazon currently operates 72 Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations nationwide. The company says it will shift its grocery strategy toward Whole Foods Market and grocery delivery through Amazon.com. All Amazon Fresh locations in Montgomery County are included in the closures. That includes two stores in Chevy Chase, one in Gaithersburg, and one in White Oak. The final day of operation for most Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores is expected to be Sunday, February 1. Locations in California are excluded from that closure timeline.

Amazon has indicated that a limited number of Amazon Fresh stores could eventually reopen as new Whole Foods Market locations. At this time, it is not known whether any of the Montgomery County sites are part of those future plans.
