McDonald’s has now confirmed an exact closing date for its longtime Derwood location. The McDonald’s at 7200 Muncaster Mill Road in the Red Mill Shops shopping center is scheduled to permanently close on March 15, ending a run that spans multiple fast-food restaurant eras at the site.
Before becoming McDonald’s in the mid-1980s, the building previously operated as both a Roy Rogers and a Hardee’s, making the location a familiar stop for generations of Derwood-area residents long before the golden arches went up. According to state property records, the structure was built in 1985 and has been part of the commercial landscape for roughly 40 years.
Following news of the closure, Derwood resident Irene Johnson has offered organizing a casual community meet-up at the restaurant before its final day. The idea was shared in a local Derwood Facebook group and is intended to give neighbors a chance to stop by one last time, swap memories, and say goodbye to a longtime local fixture.
As previously reported, the closure first came to light after Johnson noticed a listing advertising a 3,600 SF freestanding pad site with a drive-thru available for lease at Red Mill Shops. After reaching out for clarification, she was told the space would become available at the end of the first quarter of 2026, a timeline later confirmed by the property’s leasing representative.
When we visited the Derwood McDonald’s in December, the manager on duty acknowledged the restaurant would be closing but said staff had not yet been given a firm date at the time. That date is now set for March 15. As plans for the site’s future come into focus, we’ll continue to share updates.
