MCPS will operate on a two-hour delayed opening for students on Tuesday, February 3, as lingering snow and ice continue to create unsafe conditions across many neighborhoods. School offices will open on time.
District officials say schools are ready to reopen, but emphasized that the return will be challenging. While conditions are improving, many sidewalks, bus stops, and neighborhood roads remain icy or blocked by large snow piles. Significant melting is not expected anytime soon.
Bus service will run on a two-hour delay, but MCPS cautioned that not all bus stops may be accessible, particularly on narrow or icy neighborhood streets. Bus operators will attempt to reach all stops but will skip locations deemed unsafe. When a stop cannot be served, it will be documented and families will be notified. Families who believe their bus cannot safely access their stop are encouraged to report concerns to the Division of Transportation Services or by calling the Montgomery County Service Center at 311.
MCPS is urging families, students, and drivers to use extra caution throughout the week. Officials recommend allowing additional travel time, driving slowly, watching for ice and narrowed roadways, and being especially careful near bus stops, crosswalks, and school entrances where snow piles may obstruct visibility.
