Salvation Army to Permanently Close

The Salvation Army Thrift Store & Donation Center at 11550 Rockville Pike in North Bethesda will permanently close on Saturday, February 14 (h/t @pike.and.rozay).

The Salvation Army Thrift Store is a nonprofit retail operation that sells donated clothing, furniture, electronics, and household items at affordable prices. Revenue from sales supports local adult rehabilitation centers, addiction recovery programs, and other social services, helping fund community assistance while offering low cost shopping options.

Salvation Army has an additional Montgomery County thrift store at 18705 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg.

In related news, signage is now up for a new Goodwill location in Rockville. Back in December, we reported that Goodwill was set to take over the space most recently occupied by Planet Aid at the Montrose Shopping Center, the longtime shopping center anchored by MOM’s Organic Market. The storefront, located at 5520 Randolph Road, is now clearly marked as an upcoming Goodwill.

The Planet Aid thrift store and donation center closed in September, ending its run at the Randolph Road location. At the time, a Planet Aid representative said the closure was part of a planned move and that the organization was actively searching for a nearby replacement site. No new location has been announced since the store shut down.

Goodwill’s move into the space expands its presence in the Rockville area. The nonprofit already operates another store just over a mile away on Boiling Brook Parkway, which a representative confirmed will remain open. While an official opening date has not been announced, the size of the Randolph Road storefront suggests it will likely function as both a retail store and donation center. No construction details or timeline have been released, but a 2026 opening appears very likely.

As more information becomes available on construction activity or an opening timeline for the Rockville store, updates will be shared.
