One Student Shot, One in Custody Following Shooting at Wootton High School

One student was shot and another student taken into custody following a shooting inside Thomas S. Wootton High School on Monday afternoon, according to a Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) update on Monday night.

Police said a 16-year-old student is in custody after the shooting, which occurred around 2:15pm inside the Rockville school. Officers from Montgomery County police and the Rockville City Police Department responded to the scene, with assistance from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The first officers to arrive located a 16-year-old male student from Gaithersburg suffering from a single gunshot wound in a hallway inside the school. The student was transported to an area hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Investigators identified a 16-year-old male Rockville resident, who is also a student at the school, as the suspect. He was taken into custody a short time later near the school. Police said there is no ongoing threat to public safety. As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown following the incident. Students were later transported to a reunification site at approximately 4:30pm. Reunification is taking place at Robert Frost Middle School.

Police said the suspect will be charged as an adult. Investigators are consulting with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding formal charges. The suspect’s name will not be released at this time. Rockville City Police Department is serving as the lead agency for the investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
