Olney Greene Turtle Under Reconstruction Following Gas Leak Incident

The Greene Turtle in Olney has shared an update on reconstruction efforts after a driver struck the restaurant in late December, causing significant damage in the form of a gas leak and forcing a temporary closure.

The incident occurred in late December when a driver hit the back of the building at the Greene Turtle location at 18101 Town Center Drive. The crash damaged a gas meter and led to an active gas leak. As a precaution, the building was evacuated while Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews worked to secure the scene. HazMat units responded due to the gas leak, and approximately 50 firefighters were on site. The gas company also responded to assist with shutting off and securing the gas supply.

No further injuries were reported, but the damage required the restaurant to close while repairs and safety work were completed. This week, the Greene Turtle shared a message thanking the Olney community for its support and patience during the closure.

In the statement, the restaurant said it is officially under reconstruction and moving forward, noting that the encouragement from customers, neighbors, and supporters has meant a great deal during the rebuilding process. The restaurant said it plans to continue sharing updates as work progresses and it gets closer to reopening.

The message emphasized the role the Olney location plays as a neighborhood gathering place and expressed excitement about welcoming the community back once reconstruction is complete. No reopening date has been announced yet.
