Rockville City Police Department provided new details Tuesday on Monday’s shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School, outlining the sequence of events and the charges now facing the suspect.
Rockville City Police Chief Jason L. West said during a news conference at Rockville City Hall that the suspect pointed a gun at a 15-year-old female student before shooting another student inside the school. The female student was not injured.
A 16-year-old male student who was shot remains hospitalized in stable condition. Police said the investigation is ongoing and continues to focus on determining a motive, whether there was any prior relationship between the victims and the suspect, and how the suspect obtained the firearm.
Chief West was joined at the news conference by Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy and Montgomery County Sheriff Maxwell C. Uy, who emphasized the seriousness of the incident and the active nature of the investigation.
The 16-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and multiple firearms-related offenses, including possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. The suspect is currently being held without bond.
A bond hearing is scheduled for 1pm Wednesday, February 11, in Montgomery County District Court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30am Friday, February 20, also in Montgomery County District Court.
