Line Out the Door as Monkey’s Matcha Debuts

Monkey’s Matcha officially opened its doors on Sunday, Feb. 15, and the response was immediate. A line stretched out the door of Lil Cakes & Creamery in Gaithersburg Square for much of afternoon, with some customers waiting close to two hours to get their hands on the new specialty matcha drinks.

Despite the wait, the mood stayed upbeat. People chatted in line, compared drink choices, and snapped photos once their cups arrived. Several customers we spoke with said they came specifically because of the opening weekend Buy One Get One promotion, while others said they wanted to support a small business and have something tasty while doing so.

Those who waited said the experience was worth it. Customers pointed to the richness of the matcha, the balance of sweetness, and the fact that each drink was freshly whisked rather than poured from a batch. A few mentioned that while the wait was long, they would come back again when things were less crowded.

The opening menu featured the brand’s core lineup, including Salted Maple Monkey and Creamy Fig Monkey, along with limited opening season drinks like Vanilla Rose Monkey and Sticky Date & Coconut Monkey. Sunday marked the first of a two-day opening celebration. Day two continues tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 16, giving anyone who missed opening day another chance to check out the new matcha spot and take advantage of the launch specials.

If the first day is any indication, Monkey’s Matcha has quickly tapped into a strong local appetite for thoughtfully made matcha and a community-driven café experience, even if it means waiting a little longer for the first sip. You can keep up with their upcoming schedule on Instagram.
