Amazon Fresh Removes Permanent Signage

The former Amazon Fresh grocery store in Friendship Heights removed its permanent exterior signage from the building on Monday, following Amazon’s nationwide shutdown of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores earlier this month.

In January, Amazon announced it would close all 72 Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations across the country as the company shifts its grocery strategy toward Whole Foods Market and delivery through Amazon.com.

The closures included all Amazon Fresh locations in Montgomery County, including stores in Chevy Chase, Gaithersburg, and White Oak. Most locations ceased operations by February 1, with California stores excluded from that timeline.

Amazon has previously said a limited number of former Amazon Fresh locations could eventually reopen as Whole Foods Market stores, though no future plans have been announced for the Friendship Heights space.
