Suspect Accused of Shooting at State Trooper During Traffic Stop in Baltimore Arrested in Montgomery County

A suspect wanted for shooting at a Maryland State Trooper during a traffic stop early yesterday morning in Baltimore was apprehended in Montgomery County and charged with attempted murder, per Maryland State Police.

According to Maryland State Police, the accused is identified as Maurquise Emillo James, 22, of Baltimore. After consultation with the Baltimore City State’s Attorney, James has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony assault, use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and related offenses. He is currently being held without bond in Montgomery County, where he is also facing unrelated charges connected to an additional violent crime.

Authorities say intelligence sharing and multi-jurisdictional coordination between state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies led to James’ arrest in Montgomery County at approximately 3:00pm yesterday. Investigators believe James was driving a 2009 Infiniti G37 involved in the incident.

Maryland State Troopers, working alongside allied agencies, executed authorized search warrants at two residences linked to James in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Evidence recovered during those searches included the Infiniti G37.

According to police, shortly before 3:30am yesterday, a Maryland State Trooper assigned to the Golden Ring Barrack attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Belle Avenue and Milford Avenue in Baltimore City. The vehicle was traveling without headlights and without license plates.

The driver, later identified as James, initially pulled over at a stop sign. As the trooper approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, James opened his door and fired two rounds at the trooper at close range before fleeing the scene. The trooper did not return fire.

The trooper was transported to a hospital, treated for injuries, and later released. He is currently on administrative leave, per standard procedure.

Throughout the investigation, Maryland State Police were assisted by local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, including the FBI, Baltimore County Police Department, Baltimore Police Department, and Montgomery County Police Department. Crime scene technicians and forensic scientists from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division also assisted.

Police continue to urge anyone with information related to this investigation to contact 410-653-4200. All callers may remain confidential. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
