The Washington Commanders’ roster is beginning to take shape following the opening wave of free agency, with an updated but unofficial ESPN depth chart offering an early look at how things could line up heading into next month’s NFL Draft.
The clearest strength on the current roster appears to be along the offensive line. Nick Allegretti is slotted in as the starting center after showing promise in limited action last season, though the team is still expected to add competition either through a mid-to-late round draft pick or another free agent signing. Laremy Tunsil, now locked in with an extension, anchors the group at left tackle. Chris Paul returns on a one-year deal and is expected to battle Brandon Coleman for the starting left guard role, while Sam Cosmi’s return to full health solidifies right guard. Josh Conerly Jr., who showed steady growth as a rookie, rounds out the unit at right tackle. Depth remains solid with Andrew Wylie and Trent Scott capable of filling multiple roles.
Outside of the trenches, however, there are still clear questions. The running back room lacks a proven lead option, with Jacory Croskey-Merritt currently listed at the top of the depth chart. Free agent addition Rachaad White brings value as a receiving back, while Jerome Ford and Jeremy McNichols provide versatility and special teams contributions. It would not be surprising to see Washington add another back before camp, whether through the draft or a late free agency move.
At wide receiver, Terry McLaurin remains the only established top option. Luke McCaffrey is currently listed as the No. 2, but his role on the team appears far from secure. Dyami Brown returns after a stint in Jacksonville, while Treylon Burks and Van Jefferson will also compete for roster spots. None of those options provide much in terms of special teams value, which could factor heavily into final decisions. Jaylin Lane’s return ability gives him an edge, while Ja’Corey Brooks and Jacoby Jones add additional competition to a wide-open group. The lack of star-power makes Ohio State WR Carnell Tate a possibility with the seventh pick.
Tight end is one of the more balanced position groups, with Chig Okonkwo expected to step in as the primary receiving option alongside John Bates, one of the league’s better blockers. Ben Sinnott enters a pivotal third season after a slow start to his career, and Colson Yankoff provides additional depth.
At quarterback, Jayden Daniels remains the focal point. After an impressive rookie campaign that ended in an NFC Championship appearance, Daniels will look to bounce back from an injury-affected second season. Marcus Mariota returns as a steady and reliable backup.
Defensively, the transition to a 3-4 scheme could bring significant changes. While ESPN lists Daron Payne at nose tackle, many expect Tim Settle to take on that role, with Payne and Javon Kinlaw lining up on the ends. The edge group has been revamped, with Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson projected as starting outside linebackers after combining for 15 sacks last season. Dorance Armstrong, Charles Omenihu, and Deatrich Wise provide depth behind them.
At inside linebacker, Frankie Luvu and Leo Chenal project as starters, with Jordan Magee and Nick Bellore among the depth options. The defense could still see additions here, especially with edge prospects like Miami’s Reuben Bain frequently appearing in mock drafts tied to Washington.
The secondary is also undergoing a shift. Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil are currently listed as starting corners, with Amik Robertson handling nickel duties. Nick Cross steps in at strong safety, while Quan Martin starts at free safety with Will Harris behind him. Jeremy Reaves recently earned an extension, and Tyler Owens and Percy Butler round out the group. With the seventh overall pick approaching, prospects like S Caleb Downs and CB Mansoor Delane remain firmly in play.
On special teams, Tress Way returns as one of the most consistent punters in the league, while Jake Moody is penciled in at kicker but could face competition. Jaylin Lane is expected to handle punt returns, with Luke McCaffrey continuing in the kick return role after a productive season.
