Muddy Branch Liquor Store Conversion Moves Forward with $850K Permit

The City of Gaithersburg has issued a building permit valued at approximately $850,000 for the construction of the upcoming Oak Barrel & Vine at Muddy Branch Square.

The location at 866 Muddy Branch Road closed in mid-February as part of a planned four-month renovation to convert the standard county liquor store into a more modern, boutique-style retail concept. The newly issued permit reflects the scale of the project, which will introduce a redesigned interior and an upgraded shopping experience.

Oak Barrel & Vine is Montgomery County’s evolving retail concept aimed at elevating its liquor store offerings. The updated stores are designed to feature a more curated selection of beer, wine, and spirits, with a stronger emphasis on locally produced products. Plans for the space also include dedicated tasting areas and a more refined layout compared to traditional county-run locations.

Signage posted at the store at the time of closure indicated the renovation began on February 14 and is expected to take approximately four months. While an exact reopening date has not been announced, the project timeline suggests a potential early summer debut if construction progresses as scheduled.

During the closure, customers have been directed to nearby county liquor store locations including Darnestown, Walnut Hill, Gaithersburg Square, and Fallsgrove. Coming soon signage is now up in the windows of the store.
