Police Investigating Theft by Deception, Over $10K in Property Stolen

Takoma Park Police are investigating a theft by deception that resulted in more than $10,000 in stolen property.

According to police, on March 20 at approximately 7:41pm, officers responded to the 7900 block of Cole Avenue for a reported theft. The victim told police the incident began earlier in the evening, between 5pm and 6pm, while he was at a bus stop on Anne Street.

According to police, the victim was approached by an unknown man and woman who claimed they were from Saudi Arabia and needed assistance. The suspects reportedly told the victim they had a large amount of money but not in cash, and offered jewelry in exchange for cash. The victim provided an undisclosed amount of money.

The suspects then allegedly told the victim they could send him a larger sum of money once they returned to Saudi Arabia and asked if he had additional valuables. The victim then accompanied the pair to his residence, where they entered together.

Once inside, the victim showed the suspects a suitcase in a back bedroom containing personal property, including a wallet and jewelry. Police say the male suspect distracted the victim in the living room while the female suspect remained in the bedroom area and allegedly removed items.

Both suspects then left the home, entered a white Toyota SUV, and fled the area on Cole Avenue. The estimated value of the stolen property exceeds $10,000. The investigation is ongoing under case #260012220. Anyone with information is asked to contact Takoma Park Police at 301-270-1100.
