The Rockville City Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers are posing as law enforcement and demanding money.
According to police, scammers are telling victims that there is a warrant for their arrest and requesting payment through apps like Cash App or Venmo to resolve the issue. Officials say the calls can appear legitimate, with caller ID sometimes showing the department’s non-emergency number or even “Rockville City Landlord and Tenant.”
Police emphasize that this is a scam and that they will never call residents to demand payment under any circumstances. Anyone who receives one of these calls is advised to hang up immediately and contact Rockville City Police directly at 240-314-8900.
