A fatal house fire in Chevy Chase early Friday morning has left one person dead and another injured, according to Montgomery County officials.
Firefighters were first dispatched around 5:47am to the 4700 block of Merivale Road, near Westport Road, for a reported house fire with possible entrapment. Upon arrival, crews encountered fire showing from a two-story single-family home.
Initial updates indicated that all occupants had made it out of the home, with multiple individuals evaluated for smoke inhalation. However, conditions inside the house rapidly intensified, with fire spreading across multiple floors and into the garage. Downed, arcing power lines also created additional hazards as approximately 50 firefighters worked the scene.
During operations, firefighters rescued one person from inside the burning home. Several patients were treated on scene by emergency medical personnel. By 6:52am, Montgomery County police confirmed the incident had become a fatal fire. An adult female was pronounced dead. An adult male was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters remained on scene working to fully extinguish the fire as the investigation into its cause gets underway.
