Unit Citation Awarded to MCFRS Crews After Dramatic Somerset Place Rescue

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews from Company 1 and Company 2 have been awarded a Unit Citation for their actions during a February house fire that involved trapped occupants and a rapid, coordinated rescue effort.

The recognition was given to crews from Engine 702, Tower 701, Ambulance 702B, and Medic 701 following their response to a mutual aid call on February 8, 2026, at a home on Somerset Place in Prince George’s County.

According to the citation, firefighters arrived to find a two-story home with a working basement fire and multiple people trapped inside. One adult male was seen hanging from a second-story window, while others were still believed to be inside.

Engine 702 crews advanced a hose line into the home to begin fire suppression as conditions worsened. At the same time, Tower 701 was assigned to search operations and located an unconscious adult female inside a second-floor bathroom. Crews determined the safest way out and removed her through the interior of the home.

Once outside, Ambulance 702B and Medic 701 personnel provided immediate medical care. One patient required advanced life support, while another was treated and transported with high priority.

Officials say the coordinated and aggressive actions of the crews led to the successful rescue and removal of a victim trapped by smoke and fire, ultimately transitioning both patients from a life-threatening situation to definitive medical care.
