Three MCPS Employees Named Finalists for 2026 Supporting Services Employee of the Year

Three Montgomery County Public Schools employees are being recognized as finalists for the 2026 Supporting Services Employee of the Year, an honor presented annually by SEIU Local 500 in partnership with MCPS.

MCPS shared that the three finalists represent a range of roles across the school system, highlighting the impact of staff who support students and school communities in essential ways. The winner will be announced at a celebration in May.

Oscar Alvarenga, a newcomers transition coordinator with the Department of International Admissions, plays a vital role in supporting newly arrived students and their families, helping manage the transition for more than 4,000 students each year. Through his work, he connects families with critical resources like housing, healthcare and legal services, while building strong relationships across diverse communities and expanding access for vulnerable populations.

At Col. Zadok Magruder High School, Aaron McFarland works closely with students facing academic, behavioral and social-emotional challenges, providing mentorship and guidance through restorative practices and daily support. He is also a football coach and was recognized for providing life-saving assistance to a colleague, reflecting his leadership both in and out of the classroom.

Bryan Nance, a media services technician at Montgomery Blair High School, has spent 33 years with MCPS and is known for his technical expertise and behind-the-scenes role in supporting school events and programs. In addition to his work in media services, he has spent decades coaching football and track, mentoring generations of student-athletes and becoming a respected figure in the school community.
