MCPS Starts Four-Week Process to Shift Schools to Air Conditioning

Montgomery County Public Schools has begun its annual transition from heating to air conditioning systems, kicking off the process earlier than usual this year as temperatures begin to climb.

According to an MCPS update, the systemwide changeover started on April 7 and is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete across all schools. The process must be handled on a building-by-building basis due to the size and complexity of the commercial HVAC systems used throughout the district.

Unlike residential systems that can easily toggle between heating and cooling, school systems require a more involved conversion. Each building must be temporarily taken offline, drained, adjusted, and then restarted in cooling mode, making it impossible to switch back and forth in response to daily temperature swings.

MCPS officials noted that schools and programs serving students with special needs are being prioritized during the transition. Those buildings are also being closely monitored to help reduce any potential disruptions.

The district said it will continue providing updates to school principals regarding the timing of the switch at each location and is asking for patience from the community as crews work through the process.
