A Montgomery County native is stepping into one of Baltimore’s top sports media roles.
Pete Gilbert, who was born and raised in Damascus, has been named Sports Director at WBAL-TV 11, the station announced this week. He succeeds longtime Sports Director Gerry Sandusky, who retired after a 37-year career. Gilbert becomes just the fourth Sports Director in the station’s history.
The promotion marks a full-circle moment for Gilbert, who first walked through WBAL’s doors as an intern in 1995, according to his WBAL bio. He later returned to the station, where he has served as a weekend anchor and weekday reporter while becoming a familiar face to viewers across the region.
In addition to his role at WBAL-TV, Gilbert is part of the Ravens Broadcast Team, contributing to pregame and postgame coverage during the team’s preseason games across WBAL-TV 11, WBAL Plus, WBAL 1090 AM, and 98 Rock. Over the course of his career, Gilbert has earned significant recognition, including being named Maryland Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2011, 2016, and 2019.
Before returning to Maryland, Gilbert built experience at several stations across the country, including KECI-TV in Missoula, Montana, KHBS/KHOG-TV in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and WGAL-TV in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
A graduate of St. Lawrence University in New York, Gilbert has maintained strong ties to the region where he grew up, making his appointment especially meaningful for local viewers. He and his wife, Megan, have three children and currently reside in south central Pennsylvania.
