Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian that occurred on the Outer Loop of I-495 near Georgia Avenue on Thursday and are asking for the public’s help identifying a vehicle that fled the scene.
The victim, who has not yet been positively identified, was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash occurred shortly before 10 pm on the outer loop of the Beltway east of Connecticut Avenue.
According to the preliminary investigation, the victim had parked a work van on the left shoulder of the inner loop and was attempting to cross the travel lanes of the outer loop, possibly carrying a gas can, when he was struck by oncoming traffic. Police say the first vehicle that struck the pedestrian fled the scene, while the driver of a second vehicle remained and cooperated with investigators. Troopers are searching for a silver or gray sedan believed to have heavy front-end damage.
Maryland State Police from the Rockville Barrack and College Park Barrack responded along with Montgomery County Police and State Highway Administration personnel. Portions of the roadway were closed for nearly six hours during the investigation, which remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rockville Barrack at 301-424-2101.
