Maryland’s “Japanese Cava” Gains Major Local Attention

Shibuya Eatery is gaining attention in Chevy Chase after a recent Taste MoCo post highlighting the restaurant was seen by roughly a quarter million people across platforms. The video can be seen below.

The relatively new Montgomery County restaurant, located at 4461 Willard Avenue, has been described by many commenters as the “Japanese Cava,” a comparison that mirrors how chef Darren Lee Norris described the concept when it opened. The fast-casual spot offers scratch-made ramen, bento boxes, curry katsu, and other Japanese comfort foods in a counter-service format.

Shibuya Eatery opened in Chevy Chase as “Shibuya 2.0,” following the closure of its former Adams Morgan fine-dining location in April 2024. The new version was designed to be more accessible, with a focus on quicker service, takeout, and chef-driven Japanese dishes at lower price points than a traditional sit-down restaurant.

Norris, known for his work in the DC dining scene and as the chef behind the acclaimed izakaya Kushi, previously said the shift was influenced by rising restaurant costs and changing customer habits. The Chevy Chase location offers dine-in seating while leaning into the growing demand for fast, high-quality meals.
