Sprouts Farmers Market has officially signed on to open its third Montgomery County location, with a new store planned for Loehmann’s Plaza in Rockville.
Willard Retail confirmed to The MoCoShow that Sprouts will anchor the redevelopment project at the shopping center located at 5200-5296 Randolph Road. The landlord is currently working to secure the permits needed before construction can begin. News that Sprouts would be the grocer tied to the project was first reported by Robert Dyer.
Back in August, we reported that developer Rosenfeld Investments had secured a letter of intent with an unnamed grocery store to anchor the redevelopment. While the company was not identified at the time, recent confirmations now point to Sprouts as the future tenant.
The upcoming Rockville location will mark the rapidly expanding grocer’s third store in Montgomery County. Sprouts opened its first county location in January 2024 at Burtonsville Crossing, located at 15793 Old Columbia Pike. Earlier this year, we also reported that Sprouts had signed on as one of the first tenants planned for the Lakeforest redevelopment in Gaithersburg. Though it’s the third to sign on, the Loehmann’s Plaza location is expected to open before the future Lakeforest store.
Last year, the Montgomery Planning Board recently approved an amendment to widen Lauderdale Drive from 65 feet to 68 feet to better accommodate the large delivery trucks typically required by grocery operations.
Loehmann’s Plaza takes its name from the former Loehmann’s department store chain, which closed in 2014. Despite the closure of its longtime namesake tenant, the shopping center has remained active over the years with businesses including Subway, Furniture & Rug Depot, and a new Sardi’s restaurant
Plans for the property call for a major phased redevelopment that would eventually replace much of the aging retail center and expansive surface parking lots. The project is expected to include up to 680 residential units made up of townhomes and multifamily buildings, along with approximately 40,000 SF of retail space anchored by the new grocery store.
