Located in the Woodmoor area of Silver Spring, Pine Crest Elementary School has served generations of local families for more than eight decades, evolving alongside the growing Four Corners community.
The history of the school dates back to 1878, when George N. Beale purchased the land where the school now stands. More than 60 years later, in 1940, officials selected a site on St. Lawrence Drive, then known as Mathew Street, for a new school called South Four Corners Elementary School.
Construction began in 1941 after the land was officially purchased, and the school opened its doors in 1942 serving students in kindergarten through third grade. At the same time, North Four Corners Elementary opened for fourth through sixth graders. Even with the two-school setup, enrollment quickly surged, with the combined schools already overcrowded at 220 students.
As the surrounding neighborhoods continued to expand after World War II, additions soon followed. More classrooms were added in 1947, and in 1948 the school officially became Pine Crest Elementary School, serving grades K-6. According to the school’s history, the campus at the time featured a park-like setting with pine trees and a stream flowing through the property, helping inspire the school’s name.
Modern upgrades continued through the decades. Blacktop pavement was first installed in 1954, while a library and office addition were completed in 1963. In 1976, Pine Crest entered a paired-school arrangement with Montgomery Knolls, serving grades 3-6 as part of the reorganization.
The school underwent major modernization work in the early 1990s. During renovations in 1991, Pine Crest students were temporarily housed at Northwood. One year later, in 1992, students returned to a newly modernized Pine Crest building that continues serving the community today.
