Bird Lands On Firefighter During Unique Animal Rescue

A unique animal rescue call in Potomac took an unexpected turn when MCFRS crews discovered the bird they were trying to help may not have needed rescuing after all.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, personnel from PE733 responded to assist a caller who spotted an unusual bird perched in a tree and believed it might belong to someone.

Crews attempted to lure the bird down using birdseed. The plan worked perhaps a little too well. Before long, the bird flew down and landed directly on one of the responders. Adding to the memorable scene, a 6-year-old who was present affectionately named the bird “Peckers.”

Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center personnel responded and took custody of the bird. No word yet on whether Peckers has been reunited with an owner, but it certainly made quite an impression on its rescuers.
