Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded overnight to a reported apartment fire at Village Square Apartments in the 12000 block of Veirs Mill Road, near the intersection of Veirs Mill Rd. And Connecticut Ave., in Silver Spring.
According to MCFRS, firefighters located a fire in a living room. Preliminary information indicates the incident may have involved an e-bike and its lithium-ion battery.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and worked to ensure it had not spread to other areas of the building while completing ventilation and overhaul operations.
All four occupants of the apartment were accounted for and were not injured. Due to the presence of a lithium-ion battery, hazardous materials resources were requested to safely manage the scene.
MCFRS is using the incident as a reminder about the potential dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries. Officials recommend using only manufacturer-approved chargers, avoiding overcharging batteries, and keeping them away from exits and combustible materials.
